University life - Part 1

Shanghai University. That was all I knew about our Uni before heading here. I also learned that there are 15 Universities in Shanghai and when my friends where asking which Shanghai University (Tongji, Fudan, etc.) I had nothing to answer them but “Shanghai University”. Luckily it was the right name and I found myself in the right place on the registration date.

Here started the problems then. I applied to the business program with Chinese language (as also Eero from Lappeenranta) but nobody had our papers anywhere. So we fought our way through the bureaucracy and finally got ourselves enrolled for the right program. Next problem: The business program ends on mid-May, and we have told that we are supposed to stay here until 5th of July. So we got a new round with the school bureaucracy. Final solution: We will attend the business program until mid-May (also includes Chinese language 9h per week) and after mid-May we will continue in the Chinese language program until July with 20 h Chinese per week. Good job!

Next problem: My visa. For some reason I was granted only 30 day visa from the Chinese embassy in Helsinki. Well the Uni indeed offered us the prolonging but they didn’t inform us in anyway about the process. So 10 days before my Visa was finishing I marshed into the international students office and demanded some answers. I got the answers. Also some forms to fill up. Next day I gave those forms and my passport to police officer who came personally to pick it up from me and now I have my visa valid until 20th of July. Happy end.

Then the actual courses here. I have to say this will be one of the easiest semester I have ever experienced (even compare to high school). The level of the lectures is somehow very very low. Something similar to first year in Uni. The teachers mostly speak good English, but the teaching methods are just so very different. I don’t mind it that much but I don’t find it efficient either . On comparison I think in Finland the lecturers would put maybe 45 minutes into topic that lasts 4 hours here. And here it is only listening to the lecturers, who are mostly reading from their notes. No critical thinking is appreciated or conversations in the class. If there arises conversation about the topic it is somehow seen as disrespective towards the lecturer. But when in Rome… We also don’t have exams about the courses but final essays around 1500 words, which basically means two A4-paper.  All in all, very easy semester ahead.

But the Chinese language is my bright point. The teacher is very good and inspiring and has a systematic and efficient way of teaching all the aspects of a language; phonetics, spelling, speaking, writing characters and creating our own conversations out of those things we already know. Absolutely my favorite topic here!

The University doesn’t take that good care of its students but perhaps it is a local way of educational systems. However as long as we ourselves stay active, there haven’t been or should come any major problems. Let’s just say so far so good and see how the things are going.

Campus area is one of the best I have visited anywhere in Europe. It is clean, quite calm, there are parks, the buildings are quite new, only minus side is that it feels like being in Finland in class rooms (super cold). Eagerly waiting the spring to get further to see all the flowers and trees in their best.

My favorite restaurants and bars in Shanghai - So far

The Grape: Super delicious food, very cheap, great location, nice atmosphere, Grape got it all. No need to say more. Better go with bigger loft of people to order different dishes from menu.  We were 10 person group, ate about 25 dishes, drank MANY beers and the final bill was around 700 RMB in total. So far the most delicious dishes I have eaten here!

Barbarossa: Located on the People’s park this is absolutely the best place in town to enjoy the sunset. Also the juicy drinks are the best ones I have experienced in Shanghai with 50% off on Happy hours which is every day at 5-8PM. My favourite? Apple bomb.

Apple bomb on the left, some sparkling wine drink on the right - Both SUPER delicious

Radisson tower: Magnificent view over Shanghai. Cocktail bar on the top floor and spinning restaurant one below. A bit pricy but perfect one-drink stop to enjoy the famous Shanghai lights. On Sunday’s one of the town’s best brunch places; The spinning restaurant holds five different restaurants and with brunch you can enjoy all of those. With 400 RMB you get all you can eat and drink (Real champagne) menu on top of the city.

Lynne’s: Sunday all-you-can-eat Chinese brunch with 80 RMB. Great way to get to know to Chinese dishes. And the food is absolutely magnificent! Always remember the table reservation. If you go there try sesame filled chicken breast.

Whisk: Specialised in chocolate desserts but also provides food. Great wines and of course whisky. No need  to say how much I like this with my passion for chocolate...

Chocolate therapy and Sauvingon blanc

100 Avenue: Bar is located on the 92nd floor on Shanghai World Financial center with terrific view. Every Wednesday 8.30-10.30 PM free sparkling wine for ladies. Spotted: Nicholas Cage J

Bar located on 92nd floor. The 3rd highest bar in the world
Zapata’s: Spanish bar with terrific outdoor terrace. Can’t wait the summer weathers to test the terrace area. Inside quite regular. Free margaritas every Monday from 10-11 PM and super cheap drinks on Thursday evenings, only 25 RMB.

Next door to Zapata's is La Cocina. Nice interior and great tapas. Also Ladies night every Wednesday with free flow of sangria and beer.

Perry’s/V2: Perry’s upstairs and V2 on downstairs. Student bar with super cheap beers (10 RMB for large beer). This place is almost already turning into our regular last-stop-before-club-place.

Blarney Stone: Irish bar with live music. What else there is to say really? My favorite bar. Was also our base camp for St. Patrick’s day celebration.

Quick review about how I got my apartment

Our University has its own dormitory and there would have been also lovely single person rooms (although very small ones). But I had already last summer decided that I want to have an apartment from private market on the city centrum. Biggest reason for this is that since I am naturally lazy person, I would have probably stayed in the campus area most of my exchange time and only come to the centrum during the weekends.

And now? Well my apartment (or actually my room) is in the old town area with only 2 stops from the people square (takes about 10 minutes to get from my home door to the people square).  The closest metro stop is only 2 minutes walking. And the trip to school last about 30-40 minutes depending on the time of the day. For me, this is also okay. At least I can’t now sleep until there’s only 15 minute to lecture begin and then rush straight from the bed to lecture only brushing teeth in the middle like it was quite normally for me in Skinnarila. Also the walk to French Concession area (or actually to Hengshan Lu/ My favorite Irish bar here) takes only 30 minutes.

So how did I get my apartment? Last spring there were two of my friends staying in Shanghai and they gave me a contact details for a local student-based company who are especially focused on finding apartments for international students. So I contacted these two guys from the company already last autumn. During the autumn we had a email thread about my expectations, what area I want to focus, where is my school, in which price range the rent should be, etc. When I arrived to Shanghai late on Monday evening, I already knew that I would only need a hotel for the first night. On the second day morning Sergio came to pick me up from my hotel and showed me in total of 7 apartments in mine desired area. If I wouldn’t have been happy with those, they would have find more. I checked through all the apartments and number 4 became my favourite. 1.) It was close to the metro 2.) The apartment was in really good condition 3.) I would only have to change metro once on my school trip 4.) There’s straight connection to people’s square 5.) European room mates 6.) The rent is only 2000 RMB per month.

Okay my room is very very small (Mum is coming next month so I think I’ll take the sofa for that week and let mom sleep in my room), but I have my own balcony and we have a HUGE living room, working kitchen and like already mentioned, the location is just awesome. After I decided to take the room, Sergio and the landlady took care of everything for me. Registration to the local police station for temporary residence permit, opening the water/gas/internet. And what did I pay for all of this? 30% of my first month rent so 600 RMB. And additionally I got a large welcome package to Shanghai with all the good restaurants, bars, clubs, activities, etc. and montly newsletters about what kind of networking events/activities Sergio’s company organizes for us (= international students/interns) for free or for extremely low price (like cooking course for 150 RMB). So it was a win-win for both parties. And I am still very happy about my apartments.
And my room mates are super nice! Dutch girl and French girl with whom I get along very well.

Here are pics of my winner apartment!

Life sign from Shanghai

Around month in Shanghai behind now and I know I have been lazy to write you a post but the truth is, this has been extremely busy time adapting into new culture and taking care of all the bureaucratic work + our internet connection is not designed for uploading pictures...

Pudong

This post is mainly how I am doing. I have other posts on the way coming about my apartment, University, Shopping in Shanghai, Activities, etc.

So far Shanghai has treated me very gently even thought the weather has shown all of its sides from hot afternoon +32 degree temperatures to snow storms and smallish taifun-wind blows. The city itself is absolutely adorable. Forgetting the language, this could be easily some grand western metropoly, especially if walking only in the city centrum. City centrum is quite a large item to handle since it covers around 30 Square kilometers just in the inner ring and the whole Shanghai has a population of around 35 million, according to some sources being the largest city of the world according to the number of population. Mumbai would be the second. Basic idea: I love it here!

Hot Pot - Choose what you want  to eat and prepare it by yourself

I have already taken some routines here additionally for University. Every Wednesday I am playing floorball with the local finnish people for couple of hours. Then again every Wednesday is also Ladies night which means free drinks for ladies almost everywhere in the city. So after the floorball it’s normally a taxi to home, quick shower and heading to the first meeting point of the evening.

Laura already came to visit me - So we had a Ladies night out

Monday and Tuesdays are normally pretty quiet for me, also because these are the days I have most school. Then on Thursday evenings it’s Mortons. Awesome lounge on Bund where you get free Mortons (super jammy sandwiches) when you buy a 45 RMB Martini, great deal in every way! Thursday I also have Uni only on morning so I usually go wandering to the old town if the weather is nice.

There are plenty of Finnish youngsters in Shanghai and I have had the pleasure to get acquainted with many of them. Actually every months last Friday there is a meeting for all Finnish people in Shanghai at O’Malleys. And on my second week in Shanghai in February I also headed there and met a great deal of these people whom I am now having contacts. I have already found two more or less soul mate girls, Hertta and Eeva, with whom I will definitely keep in touch also after this exchange period. Such a lovely girls!
